A “tattoo cover-up” refers to the technique of covering an existing tattoo with a new one.
People choose to have a cover-up for a variety of reasons, such as wanting to change or improve the design of a previous tattoo, conceal or remove an unwanted tattoo, or simply refresh an old design.
This technique involves creating a new tattoo that, in some way, conceals or incorporates the original design.

A new tattoo
A new tattoo is usually carefully planned to ensure that it effectively covers the previous design and blends in seamlessly.
Options and techniques
Other more recent techniques being used for covers include ‘blackouts’, which involve creating large areas of black, such as an entire sleeve.
We could also use the ‘Blast over’ technique, which involves designs characterised by very thick lines filled with black or another colour, applied over existing tattoos; the two coexist harmoniously, with the new tattoo taking centre stage and the old one becoming a background.
Another option would be the “White on Black” technique.
Any of these three would be a good choice for a cover version.
It is important to bear in mind:
- Design and Colour: The new design should be dark or vibrant enough to completely cover the existing tattoo. Often, colours are chosen strategically and a design is selected that complements the existing tattoo well.
- Experienced Artist: Performing a cover-up is a delicate task that requires specific skills on the part of the tattoo artist. It is important to choose an artist with experience in cover-ups to ensure a successful result.
- Size and Shape: In some cases, the new tattoo may need to be larger than the original design to provide effective coverage. The shape of the new design can also affect how well it blends with the existing tattoo.
- Contrast and Detail: Creating a good contrast between the original tattoo and the new design is key. Careful attention to detail, shading and lines can help make the cover-up more effective.
It is important to bear in mind that not all tattoos are ideal candidates for a cover-up. Factors such as the tattoo’s location, the original colour intensity and the quality of the ink can affect the feasibility of the technique.
If you’re considering a tattoo cover-up, it’s advisable to consult a professional tattoo artist to discuss your options and assess whether you can achieve the desired result.
